Germany's newest virtual production LED screen is located in Munich Date: , Theme: CreatiF

The CreatiF Center at the University of Television and Film Munich presented its new LED screen in March 2025. It makes it possible to display digital backdrops and realistic backgrounds in real time and thus further develop conventional green screen technology in film and television.

The choice of the Crystal LED Verona virtual production wall is the result of an intensive exchange between the CreatiF Center and the film and television industry, whose complex requirements needed to be met as specifically as possible. A ten square metre mobile LED screen is now installed in the studio. The live interaction between camera, actors and virtual background allows film scenes to be visualized directly on set.

Prof. Bettina Reitz, President of the University of Film and Television  Munich (HFF), officially presented the new virtual production LED wall. The participants from politics and the film, theater and television community were given an insight into the new possibilities offered by digital communication between the camera and the virtual production wall. The virtual background technology originates from the gaming scene. Similar to what we are used to from gaming, the angle of view of the backdrop changes as the camera moves.

Together with their project partners, the HFF researchers will test the technical limits of the LED wall and develop new workflows on set for film and television productions. “We aim to delve into scenic research. We want to know which shots are possible,” says Simon von der Au, head of the IHS CreatiF project, describing the working group's next steps. For example, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits is testing its research results on AI methods on the LED wall. For HFF students, this new technology offers a benefit for their future careers. From now on, students will develop new ways of filmmaking and be trained in the latest technology.
