Testing the future of filmmaking

How will the use of artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and virtual production techniques in film and art change the way we tell stories? At the Film Innovation Lab in July 2024, start-ups and experts from the film industry were able to discuss this question with the public.

The Film Innovation Lab was jointly organised by Wavelab, the innovation lab and start-up centre of the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts, and the CreatiF Centre of the University of Television and Film. At the one-day event on 4 of July 2024, filmmakers and interested laypeople met in Munich to test how AI and similar modern technologies can be used profitably. The Film Innovation Lab was conceived as a transdisciplinary playground for immersion, experimentation and discussion.

The event kicked off with inspiring keynote speeches, including hints on using the Unreal Engine to prototype scenes and entire films as well as thought on creating ethical AI content. The subsequent panel discussion focussed on the opportunities and challenges presented by these new technologies. At the end of the event, participants were given the opportunity to test various prototypes and creative projects.
